Out of Place_an ongoing archive is a project conceived by Associazione 22:37 that began in 2013. This new phase of the project is initiated together with the newly formed Berlin-based association Peninsula.

The purpose of Out of Place is to collect a range of materials, mainly quotations, publications, and images, related to the concept of contemporary nomadism. The purpose of Out of Place is to create a temporary archive housing a broad overview of theoretical references and ideas about nomadism and its effects on the forms of contemporary art production. The core of our research is based on the idea that being “out of place” is a condition that causes a subject to continuously relocate himself or herself. This process leads to a movement that is not only physical but temporal as well, necessary to construct the constantly changing meaning of our presence in a place. While the increasing mobility and artistic migration in recent years have helped to highlight the effects that an itinerant life can have on the concept of the site and on the artistic practice itself, we are still often linked to the idea that the identity of a person, and especially of an artist, is closely connected to a place of belonging and that a place can be our own, because we are somehow fundamentally associated with it. As Miwon Kwon illustrated in 2002, this kind of relationship with “right” places is usually considered useful to reaffirm our sense of self, reflecting back an image of a grounded identity. In opposition, “wrong” places are unfamiliar, disorienting, and threatening to our capacity to constitute a sense of self and the world. In overcoming the dualistic system of thinking about our sense of place, it opens the possibility to explore the critical and creative potential of being out of place as a temporal and spatial movement able to constitute new relations between the subject, the context, and their temporary meaning. The archive will explore the complex issue of being “out of place” through the involvement of realities that act and move in different cultural territories. We will start from the 1960s when this condition was investigated by many artistic practices that reflected on the relationship between the artistic process, the context in which they act, and the space for their recognition. We would like to collect materials about projects and ideas that consider contemporary nomadism as a condition that traverses, not only physically, territories not yet encoded, where, in order to reach a possible and temporary place of belonging, movement without a default destination is necessary.
