Berlin, September 26-28, 2014

dotLand is the title of the first exhibition organised by Peninsula.
It is a virtual place, located online, but also a land, a soil, a country, an actual territory where people meet.

The artists of Peninsula have invited other artists from around the world to put together an exhibition, which mirrors the relationship between Berlin and the greater cultural map which it contains.

dotLand is therefore the ideal place of encounter for every type of discipline.
It can be seen as an index of different languages, in which the variety of forms and styles underline the relationship, and necessary existence of that which is other.

The first cosmopolitan was Diogenes, when he asserted that he was a citizen of the world. In the 1950’s, over two millennia later, American sociologist and anthropologist Ruth Hill Useem coined the term ‘Third culture kids’ to define children who were raised in a culture different from their parents’. In the 90’s, this phrase was developed into the ‘Third Space’ theory by Homi K. Bhabha, which puts forward the hybrid nature of the individual.

Peter Weibel in Beyond Art: A Third Culture talks of the great contribution made by Austrian and Hungarian artists and scientists during the XXth Century. These two interweaving cultures have produced a new methodological approach in the relationship of art and science. Weibel saw culture as a dynamic system to produce understanding across geographical, political and ethical boundaries.

It captures the true essence of culture – to generate understanding.
